Utilisation

Use

The identification tool applies to butterflies (Papilionoidea, 202 species), red burnets (14 species) and green burnets (9 species) naturally present in Switzerland and observed after 2000 (you can download the full species list). If a species not occurring in Switzerland is submitted to the tool, it will suggest the most similar Swiss species among the 225 species in its database, sometimes with a very high confidence score. It is possible to upload several photos (up to 5). Accuracy will be improved if both sides of the butterfly are visible, whether in the same photo or in two different photos. Please note that the photos may show different individuals but the algorithm will treat them as belonging to the same species. If in doubt about this, try uploading them individually and compare the results. If a photo features several individuals, these will be detected by the algorithm and also treated as belonging to the same species. It may then be prudent to submit the individuals separately by cropping the photo in different ways. To optimise identification, it is important to crop the photo as close as possible to the butterfly, using the tool available in the top left-hand corner of the thumbnail of the uploaded photo. If the photos contain a GPS position and a date (recorded by the camera or smartphone in the EXIF parameters of the photos), tick the ‘Use GPS position and date’ box to use this data, which will help determine the species. If you are unsure what EXIF information your photos contain, we recommend ticking the box anyway.

How it works

Automatic identification is based on an image recognition algorithm that identifies the butterfly visible in the photos you upload. The result is presented in the form of a list of species to which are assigned values representing the level of confidence of the identification (as a percentage). If GPS position and date are taken into account, an ecology algorithm is used to complement the image algorithm. The ecology algorithm considers where (region, altitude, natural environment, slope, exposure, etc.) and when species are most likely to be observed. If a photo contains coordinates for the Swiss Plateau, the ecology algorithm will assign a very low probability of presence to mountain species. If both algorithms (image and ecology) are used, the probability of correctly identifying a species is calculated as a function of the probabilities of the two algorithms.

Minimum photo quality

The automatic image recognition tool is designed to take into account the variability in appearance of the species (differences between males and females, subspecies, ecological forms etc.), the orientation of the butterfly (upperside or underside, mixed view) and the direction of the light (presence of shadows, backlighting, transparent view, etc.). For a correct result, however, it is important that the photos submitted exceed a minimum quality threshold. Whatever the relative size of a butterfly in a photo (the proportion between the butterfly and the background), the butterfly itself should be represented by an area of at least 100 x 100 pixels (very approximately). Moreover, if you are uploading JPEGs or other compressed formats, avoid high compression ratios. On this page you will find examples of photos of sufficient and insufficient quality. In addition to JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP formats are accepted.

Reliability

Numerous tests have shown that the image algorithm delivers high-quality results, as summarized in this video (in French). In addition, a PDF version (in German) of one of our latest presentations is available for download here.

Utilizzo
