Hi there
I saw this butterfly near to Wattenwil BE / Forst in Gurbental. It was in grassland by the River Gürber about 650 metres altitude on 10 August last year.
I found it difficult to identify which of the 3 Plebejus blue butterflies it was. Any help identifying this would be really appreciated!
Many thanks
Michael
Hi Michael,
This is a female idas blue (Plebejus idas), with an unusually prominent blue suffusion on the upperside. The orange markings on the upperside directly point to a female. Among other features that exclude the two other similar species, females argus never show such an extended blue suffusion and argyrognomon does not fly in the area.
You might be interested in comparing the three species on this page. Select for example Critères d’identification below Comparer, then select the three species in the list lower down, then click Comparer below Sélection à comparer.
Best regards,
Vincent
