Strangely patterned burnet (zygaena)

Déposé par Antonia, le 02.07.2022

I took this picture of a coplation of two zygaenae of different species (I think). One of them has a strange pattern, somehow it looks like the result of a cross-breeding. Or is it a zygaena osterodensis? Photos taken in Unterbäch, Valais, 24 June 2022. Many thanks for your help.

Dear Antonia,

As suggested by the diffuse boundaries of the red markings, the strange pattern is an aberration case (abnormal extent of the red spots). It sometimes occurs in Zygaena species. The aberrant individual is obviously also Zygaena lonicerae.

Best regards,

Vincent
